Twenty-five participants from Masiaka, Lunsar and Port Loko contested for the Mamoud Idriss Trophy in the 2019 Bai Bureh Festival marathon. Controversy erupted when the top three participants, one from Lunsar and two from Masiaka, varied the route to the finish line. The three runners were then disqualified. The first, second and third position marathoners were given to those that used the correct routes. Runners were supposed to travel by Upper Kambia Road after reaching Malekuray Junction. But, due to the lapses of the street judge and the escort bike, they entered Falaba Road via the central roundabout then on to the finish line at the Port Loko clock tower. The route was explained by the starting judge before the commencement of the marathon but unfortunately the runners got confused and could not accurately identify the route along unfamiliar streets. The Physical Health Education Teacher’s Council, the Port Loko Sports Promoter’s Association and the organizers intervened and calmed the tensions amongst the runners and families. The winners were given cash prizes and the top placed three runners received medals and certificates. Each participant received recognition and a certificate. Mamoud Idriss Tarawallie sponsored the event and said all runners should be congratulated for participating. His keynote address climaxed the Festival. Unisa Totti Fofanah, the Executive Director of the Foundation, thanked the organizers and said the event was a success.
