The Mayor of Freetown City Council (FCC) has stated that the Saturday cleaning exercise should not be used as a garbage dumping platform but rather for cleaning of homes and surrounding in the municipality. She made such revelation during an engagement with news men ahead of this Saturday’s cleaning after several postponements due to the private WASSCE exams and by-elections. It was noted that when President Bio introduced the National Cleaning Day, the intention was to galvanize the participation of citizens in cleaning the nation. However, many residents now keep their domestic and commercial waste for a month and use the monthly National Cleaning Day to dispose of that waste for free. The hoarding of waste by residents has negative health and environmental impacts, encouraging the breeding of mosquitoes and vermin. She encouraged residents to use the day to clean around their homes and communal areas in their neighbourhood. “Freetown City Council and our partners will be on hand to clear the waste generated from cleaning frontages, gutters, and fields amongst others.
