Importers want freight charges harmonised by season

The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Importers Association (SLIA) Rashid A. Conteh has said that they are asking government to harmonise the local freight charges with the international rates. At a dialogue meeting with the Ministry of Finance last week, he said this is to recognise and accept that freight charges fluctuate according to seasons. Presenting his Association’s recommendation to the Ministry of Finance, Conteh explained that the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Custom’s Department local freight cost is not seasonal. The Custom’s Department pegged the freight cost of 20 and 40 feet containers at US$6,000 and US$3,000 respectively, which means that even if the Importer pays less from the country of origin when they are declaring they should state what they have pegged the containers at.
