Increasing spate of violence spurs CGG press release

Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) has issued a press statement raising concern over the alarming increase of the spate of violence in the country. The statement urged the Government to “take urgent, lawful and thorough steps to curb the rising level of violence.” They said they have “…monitored and documented with dismay, the several reported incidences of violence across the country, but we are concerned just in January to date that four critical incidents of violence have been recorded.”  Highlighting the trend of violence, CGG pointed out that “on Saturday 11th January, 2020 at Motuo village Kpanda –Kemo Chiefdom Bonthe District, a female Paramount Chief’s residence was attacked by a large crowd of men who were members of the Poro Society.” According to Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone findings, the Chief spent seven hours under siege. In the same vein, an elderly woman was reportedly gang raped by 15 unidentified members allegedly of the Poro Society during their initiation ceremony. CGG also added, “On Tuesday 14th January, 2020 during a funeral procession of a former SLPP member, violence erupted along Hannah Benka-Coker Street and Syke Street by the APC party office which resulted to pelting of stones and the unrest of citizens along this area. Disturbing image of a man stabbed several times on the head went viral.” Furthermore, “On Sunday 26th January, 2020 there was a public disorder incident along Wallace Johnson and ECOWAS Streets in Freetown.  The incident resulted in several injuries and malicious damage to vehicles and buildings causing public unrest in the vicinities.”
