The Coroner’s Department of the Connaught Hospital buried over 800 unidentified and unclaimed bodies in 2019, according to Sinneh Kamara, Coroner Technician. He added, 60% of those bodies were between 24–35-years. “Most times, over 40 bodies are buried in one grave,” said Kamara. The country’s Pathologist and Consultant Coroner (an individual who enquires into the cause of death and identifies unknown persons that are found dead), Dr. Simeon Owizz Koroma, said the cause of death for these unidentified and unclaimed bodies includes pneumonia, malaria and others. Kamara said the office of the coroner is established by governments all over the world to investigate the causes of all unnatural deaths and report to government through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation as to the causes of death.
