The Mano River Union (MRU) on Thursday 3rd October 2019 celebrated its 46 years of existence at their Wilberforce Loop office in Freetown. The Secretary General of MRU Ambassador Medina Wesseh said they are indeed grateful for the foresight of the founders who had the regional vision and inspiration and they are blessed with the dynamism of the current leaders and Heads of State of the four member states for the birth of regional integration in West Africa. “It is this vision which led to the creation of the MRU on the 3rd October, 1973 as a Customs Union. The aim at that time was to promote free movement of goods and peoples in the sub- region. To-date the trail has since been blazing and the continental body, the African Union, has proudly taken the biggest leap with the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area as an integral part of its Agenda 63 which came into effect in July of this year.” She said the MRU Secretariat in line with the continental objectives is pleased to disclolse the preparations of its new 5 year strategic plan which will be finalized shortly following a validation workshop next week. The presentation of the final report will be made to the Ministerial Council UMC and Heads of State for approbation.
