Nigeria’s Oragwu Chukwunonso wins 2019 Maiden African  Chess Championship In Freetown

Nigeria’s Oragwu Chukwunonso was on Wednesday 11th September 2019 crowned champion of the just concluded maiden 2019 African Amateur Individual Chess Championship, held at the Hotel Bamoi west of Freetown from 3rd to 12th September instant. Six countries including Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Sudan participated in Four different categories U2, 300; U1, 700; Rapid and Blitz. Oragwu Chukwunonso won in three different categories and took home a golden trophy, medal and a cash prize of One Thousand United States Dollars in the U2,300 category, where he secured Seven-and-half points. His strongest opponent in the U2,300 category Ivorian-born Degondo Simplice Armel also won three second places including U2,300 category where he secured Six-and-half points and collected Six Hundred and Eighty-eight US dollars as cash prize, a Silver trophy and a medal. In third place was Sudan’s Atif Mahguob Elhassan who won two third place spots including the U2,300 category, where he secured Six-and-half points and was awarded with a Bronze medal plus Five Hundred and Sixty-two US dollars as cash prize; followed by another Sudanese Mohamed Faisul who won third place in the Rapid category.
