Sierra Leone News: PARHA engages youth leaders on reduction

The Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Associations of Sierra Leone (PPASL) David E. Williams has said teenage pregnancy is a menace amongst young people in Sierra Leone, which contribute 46.8% of maternal deaths amongst adolescent girl’s. He made such pronouncement on Thursday 3rd October 2019, when the  People Alliance for Reproductive Health Advocacy (PARHA)  Coalition with support from PPASL,  engaged youth leaders and women groups on the safe motherhood and reproductive health legislation at Palm Hotel in Lumley. The safe motherhood and reproductive health legislation is a proposed law to tackle the issue of teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, and school and university dropouts in Sierra Leone. According to the Executive Director, teenage pregnancy is one of the drivers for the high rate of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. “The first factor is high rate of teenage pregnancy which stands at 28%.”
