Takaray Koroma, a Sowie who have been practicing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the North West Region of Sierra Leone has denounced the cutting aspect of FGM and called on fellow women to uphold the culture and reject the initiation side of it. Takaray made this statement on Monday 25th November 2019 during the commemoration of the Sixteen Days of Activism at the Parish Hall, Falaba Line in Port Loko. She mentioned that she was initiated into the ‘Bondo’ society during her early age, and that she has regretted going through such practice because she has been having lots of difficulties in terms of giving birth to her children. She further blamed the parent of most children for allowing their children to undergo the said act, “because we are not forcing them to give us their children for initiation- they do so willingly.” “We cannot reject them because that is where we get our living,” she pointed out. Tankaray said she has reformed her mindset and most of her other colleagues through trainings which has helped them to accept the good side of the tradition and kick away the bad one. In his statement, Reverend Father Augustine Amos Sesay said there is no where in the Bible that God said a woman should be circumcised, and that it is just an act of man to get their way through.
